What is hebrew gematria?

hebrew gematria is a system of numerical values assigned to letters and words in the Hebrew language. The system is used to assign numerical values to words, allowing them to be analyzed and interpreted numerically. Gematria has been used for centuries to interpret the meaning of words in the Bible, Talmud, Kabbalah and other sacred texts.

The basis of Hebrew Gematria lies in the fact that each letter of the Hebrew alphabet has its own numerical value between one and nine hundred. As each word comprises of one or more letters, each word also has its own numerical equivalent or gematrical value. This value is determined by adding up the values of all letters of that particular word. For example, the word 'Shalom' (which means "peace") has a gematria value of four hundred and twenty-five.

Gematria is believed to contain hidden meanings behind each word and phrase based on its numerical equivalent or gematrica value. This allows one to interpret words both by their literal meaning and by their numeric significance. For instance, some scholars believe that there are deeper meanings behind certain phrases found within scripture due to their gematric value. For example, one interpretation believes that every human being needs peace in order to be at harmony with himself and it's no coincidence that 'Shalom' has a gematric value corresponding to this idea (four hundred and twenty-five).

Gematria is a fundamental part of Jewish mysticism called Kabbalah which focuses on understanding the relationship between God, humanity and the universe itself. As such it can be seen as an esoteric form of divination where interpretations are made from numbers rather than symbols or other signs as it was practiced in ancient times before astrology or tarot cards were developed. In modern times, some people use Hebraic Gematria as a meditation tool for spiritual growth or personal insight; others just for fun or curiosity about numerology itself.
